The boaters high tech flood mark

As you know the country has been experiencing quite a lot of rain. Maffi is moored in a slightly better position than last time, and instead of marking off scaffold poles to ascertain the movement of the water, he has marked his window:

Apparently the top one was where the water was when he started taping yesterday morning.

Hang on. As the boat rises and falls WITH the water, won't the mark always be the same!?

And parallax errors?

Depends if it's pre- or post-gin.

All is revealed.

Yes the boat does go up and down with the water but the bank stays constant so as the depth of the water increases/decreases the boat rises/falls relative to the bank.

The marks were placed on the window with the top edge of the tape aligned by eye with the horizontal fore and aft surface of the hard edge so iliminating parallax error.

(For fore and aft read from front to back looking out of the window.)

You see, that makes sense. Originally Bones said the top mark showed where the WATER was, which really would have been interesting, and probably fatal. You don't get much more interesting than that.
