Oxford to Market Harborough

This film on YouTube has been knocking around for a bit so I thought I would put it on here.

The turntable is at Sheep wash and is now disused. I am sure the first lock is Shipton Weir Lock. This is very interesting as it shows the lock cottage that used to be there:

  1. absolutely brilliant! Even without any sound you can hear the boat engines and peoples voices; any idea when this was and what the event was? Thanks for posting it.

  2. Yes, great film, but its not a "turntable" but, as your picture shows, a swing bridge that once carried the line over the Sheepwash. At one time all boats entering or leaving the Sheepwash channel had to arrange for the bridge to be swung for them. In the 1970s I recall making special arrangements for this to be done at 8.00am on New Year's Day!

Starcross - you are absolutely right!I KNOW it is a swing bridge yet I always seem to call it a turntable - rediculous and I shall endeavour to correct myself!!!!
